Quick answer. No, you are not supposed to tip a mobile mechanic. The price you agreed to pays for the visit, and a good mechanic does not expect more. If someone went far past the job, a small tip, a cold drink or a review is a kind way to say thanks. Car Talk puts a fair tip at $5 to $20, not a percent of the bill.
Key Points
- A tip is never required, and it should never be part of the price.
- If you want to tip, $5 to $20 is plenty. Skip the restaurant math on a repair bill.
- In California, a tip handed to an employee belongs to that employee.
- A review that names the tech helps a small crew more than cash does.
- A tip never takes the place of a written estimate. Get the price first.
We work in a lot of driveways. Hemet, San Jacinto, work lots in Riverside, the side of the road at night. And near the end of a job, a lot of people ask us the same thing in a low voice. Do I tip you? Here is the straight answer from the people holding the wrenches.
Why Mechanics Are Not Tipped Workers
A server can earn a low base wage and count on tips to make rent. A mechanic does not work that way. The labor rate is built to pay for the tech, the truck, the tools, the scanner and the insurance. Ours is posted on our home page at $150 an hour. If the job pays for itself, nobody needs a tip to make it worth the drive.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the median pay for auto technicians was $50,620 a year in May 2025. It also says shops pay techs either by the hour or by the amount of work they finish. Tips are not part of that picture. You can read it in the BLS outlook for automotive technicians.
If you are not sure, you are not alone. In a Pew Research Center survey of 11,945 adults in August 2023, 72% said tipping is expected in more places than it was five years ago. Only 34% said it is easy to know whether to tip for a given service. That is from Pew's tipping report, published November 9, 2023. Mechanics just are not one of the jobs where it is expected.
When a Tip Makes Sense
A tip is a thank you for going past the job, not a fee for doing it. AAA Northeast put the question to its own people in January 2026. The executive who runs its Approved Auto Repair program said tips are welcome but you should not feel you have to. Its Car Doctor, a former mechanic, said a coffee on a cold day or a lemonade on a hot one always landed well. That is in AAA's Ask a Mechanic.
From our side of the hood, these are the times a tip feels earned.
- A late night roadside call. Someone got out of bed and drove to you at 2am.
- Hard weather. A long job on hot asphalt in August, or under a car in the rain.
- Real teaching. The tech showed you the old part, explained it in plain words, and told you how to stop it from happening again.
- Care for your place. Drips cleaned up, cardboard under the car, and the driveway left the way they found it.
- Speed when it mattered. You had to get to work, and they got you there.
If none of that happened and the job was just done right, a plain thank you is a complete answer.
How Much to Tip by Situation
This table is our take from the driveway, not a rule. The dollar range comes from Car Talk's advice to tip $5 to $20 based on how grateful you feel.
| Situation | Tip Needed? | What Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Oil change or battery swap at home | No | A thank you and a review |
| Roadside call late at night or in the rain | Optional | $5 to $20, or a cold drink |
| Long job in summer heat | Optional | Cold water, shade, $10 to $20 if you like |
| Big repair like an engine or timing belt | No | A detailed review that names the job |
| Shop or dealer service | Optional | Hand it to the tech yourself, or bring something the whole crew can share |
Skip the percent. Twenty percent of a $1,200 repair is $240, and nobody on a crew expects that. Some pages online say to tip 10 to 20% of the bill. We think that is wrong for car work. It turns a thank you into a second bill.
Who Keeps the Tip
With a mobile mechanic, the person in your driveway is the person who did the work. That makes it simple. Hand it to them.
California law backs that up. The state Labor Commissioner explains that Labor Code Section 351 bars an employer from keeping any part of a tip left for an employee. Tips are the sole property of the employee they were given to. If a tip goes on a card, the employer has to pay it to the employee by the next regular payday. It is all on the Labor Commissioner's tips and gratuities page.
At a big shop it can get murky. Tom Dwyer Automotive, an independent shop, wrote in February 2025 that its service advisors pass cash tips to the techs. It also said that at a dealer the money may stop at the front desk. That is from their post Should You Tip Your Mechanic. If you want the tech to get it, put it in their hand.
Thanks That Help More Than Cash
Ask most small crews what helps the most and you will hear the same few things.
- A review that names the tech. Say who came out and what they fixed. Tom Dwyer called a review the best way to thank the whole shop, and we agree. Reviews are how the next driver in Hemet or San Jacinto decides who to call.
- A referral. Tell your neighbor, your coworker or your family group chat.
- A good place to work. A flat spot, a little shade, pets inside, the keys ready. A mobile job goes faster when the car is easy to reach.
- A cold drink in summer. Our valley gets hot. A bottle of water on a long job is never forgotten.
What a Tip Should Never Do
A tip should never buy a lower price, a faster spot in line or a skipped step. The price should be set in writing before any work starts. The Los Angeles County consumer affairs office says California law requires a written estimate before repairs, and a shop cannot charge more than that estimate without your OK. See the county's car repair guide.
That is how we work too. We text you a written estimate, and you approve it from your phone before we start. Tipping has nothing to do with your warranty either. Our labor warranty is 90 days or 5,000 miles whether you tip or not. If a mechanic hints that a tip gets you a better job, that is a red flag. Our guide to finding an honest mechanic in Riverside County covers the others.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it expected to tip a mechanic?
No. Mechanics are paid through the labor rate, not through tips. A tip is a thank you for service that went past the job, and it is always your choice.
How much should I tip a mobile mechanic?
If you want to tip, $5 to $20 is plenty. Base it on how much they went out of their way, not on the size of the bill.
Is it rude to not tip a mechanic?
No. Most mechanics never expect a tip. A thank you and paying on time is good manners. A review is a bonus.
How much to tip an oil change guy?
You do not need to tip for an oil change. If the tech did something extra, like topping off fluids or showing you a leak, a few dollars is a kind gesture.
Do you tip a tow truck driver or roadside tech?
It is optional. Many people give $5 to $20 when the driver comes out late at night or works in bad weather. It is never required.
Can I put a tip on my card?
Ask first. Some mechanics take card tips and some do not. In California, a card tip left for an employee has to be paid to that employee by the next regular payday.
