How Much Does Roadside Assistance Typically Cost?

What roadside assistance costs in 2026. Insurance add ons, AAA, pay per call and the free freeway patrol in Riverside County, plus what no plan pays for.

Quick answer. Roadside assistance runs from free to more than $160 a year, or around $80 a call if you pay as you go. An add on to your car insurance is the cheapest plan, often about $25 a car per policy period. A motor club like AAA runs about $40 to more than $160 a year, per Consumer Reports. Visa's pay per call line charged $79.95 a call on an April 2026 card guide. None of them pay for the repair.

Key Points

  • Insurance add ons are the cheapest, but you need the right coverage first, and a call may count as a claim.
  • AAA in Southern California gives Classic members 4 calls a year and a free tow of 7 miles. Plus gets 100 miles.
  • No plan at all? A pay per call line through many Visa cards was $79.95 a call with 5 miles of towing.
  • On weekday commutes, the Freeway Service Patrol helps for free on the 91, the 215, part of the 15 and part of the 60.
  • A plan pays for the tow or the jump. The new battery or alternator is on you.

We get a lot of roadside calls. Dead batteries in a Hemet parking lot. A flat on the 215 at night. A truck that will not crank in a San Jacinto driveway at 5am. And a lot of people tell us the same thing. They had no idea what their plan covered until they needed it. Here is what roadside help costs in 2026, worst surprises first.

The Four Ways to Pay for Roadside Help

Every roadside plan is one of four kinds. Each one has a catch, and the catch matters more than the price.

Car insurance add onAbout $25 a car per policy periodTow, jump, tire change, lockoutNeeds comprehensive on some policies, may count as a claim
Motor club like AAAAbout $40 to $160+ a yearSet number of calls, longer tows on higher tiersNew members wait for the bigger tiers

Freeway Service PatrolFreeJump, tire, a gallon of gas, tow off the freewayWeekday commute hours on set freeways only

The add on, motor club and warranty figures are from Consumer Reports' July 9, 2023 guide. It found Allstate would add roadside to a policy for as little as $25 per vehicle per billing period. It put full service clubs at about $40 to more than $160 a year, and said maker plans usually last at least three years and tow to an authorized dealer. Consumer Reports also warned that insurance roadside calls may be counted as claims.

Before you add it to your policy, check what it needs. Nationwide says you must have comprehensive coverage to add towing. It also says its labor coverage pays for work at the scene but not the cost of parts. That last part is the one that bites people.

What AAA Covers in Southern California in 2026

Riverside County is served by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Its rules changed this year, so older blog posts are out of date. We read the club's own 2026 California member guide and its Classic page on October 19, 2026. Here is what matters.

LevelFree Tow DistanceWho Can Get It
Classic7 milesAnyone. New California members start here.
Plus100 milesClassic members after 90 days with no tows
PremierOne tow up to 200 miles a year, then 100Plus members any time, or Classic after 90 days with no tows

Locked out? Classic tries to get you in for free when the keys are in the cabin, and pays up to $60 toward a locksmith when keys are lost or broken. Plus pays up to $100.

Three rules catch people.

  • Fewer calls for family members. For anyone who joins or renews on or after August 20, 2026, the main member gets 4 service calls a year and each added family member gets 2. Before that, each member got 4.
  • You cannot join after you break down. A breakdown that happened before you joined is not covered. The club will help for a separate service fee.
  • Seven miles goes fast. On Classic, a tow past 7 miles is paid to the tow company at its own rate. The tow company can take the car to its own yard for free, no matter how far, but that may not be where you want it.

AAA does not post one dues price for the club. It asks for your zip code. Get the price on the club's site before you count on the Consumer Reports range.

No Plan? What a Single Call Costs

If you have no plan, check your wallet before you call a tow company. Many Visa cards include Roadside Dispatch. It has no dues and no sign up. You call 1-800-847-2869 and pay per call. A Visa Signature guide from one credit union, dated April 21, 2026, listed the fee at $79.95 a call. That covers a tow of up to 5 miles, a tire change with a good spare, a jump, a lockout, or up to 5 gallons of fuel plus the cost of the fuel. You pay the tow company for every mile past 5. The guide says the fee can change, and you are told the price before they send anyone.

Want a sense of a tow with no plan at all? Policygenius put the average tow at $75 to $125 in an October 6, 2021 article. Longer tows, nights and holidays cost more. Our post on 24 hour mechanics covers what late night calls add.

Free Roadside Help in Riverside County

Here is the one the national cost guides skip. The Riverside County Transportation Commission runs the Freeway Service Patrol with the CHP. Marked tow trucks drive the freeway looking for stuck cars, and the help is free. The drivers are not even allowed to take a tip.

  • Where. All of the 91 and the 215 in Riverside County. The 15 from the 60 south to Temecula Parkway. The 60 from Milliken Avenue to Theodore Street.
  • When. Weekdays 6am to 8:30am and 1:30pm to 6pm. Friday afternoons start at 11:30am. No holidays.
  • What. A jump, a tire change, water for the radiator, tape on a hose, or one gallon of gas. If they cannot get you going, they tow you free to a CHP approved spot off the freeway.

Outside those hours, call 911 if you are in danger or cannot get out of the lanes. The commission says CHP will send a rotation tow at standard rates. The yellow call boxes still work too, and they cover more than 300 miles of road. Never cross the freeway to reach one.

Do not leave the car on the shoulder and come back for it later. The CHP rotation tow page lists a car left on a freeway for over four hours as one it can store. Then you pay the tow and the storage.

What No Roadside Plan Pays For

This is what the top cost guides skip. A roadside plan gets the car moving or gets it to a shop. It does not fix it. If the battery is dead because it is old, the jump gets you home and the car is dead again the next morning.

So we pulled our own numbers. These are the medians from 953 paid Supercanic invoices from August 18, 2025 to October 17, 2026, before tax. We only show a repair type with at least 15 jobs behind it.

What the Repair Costs After the Roadside Call

Pay per call, one service (Visa guide)$79.95
Diagnostic visit (254 jobs)$150
Battery replacement (19 jobs)$363
Starter (22 jobs)$438
Alternator (19 jobs)$515
Fuel pump or injectors (15 jobs)$530
Bars run from $0 to $600. Repair figures are medians from our own paid invoices, August 18, 2025 to October 17, 2026, before tax. The pay per call fee is from the Visa guide linked above.

See the gap? The roadside call is the small bar. A no start that turns out to be a starter or an alternator costs five or six times the call. That is why we tell people to put the money where the risk is. A $25 add on is fine for jumps and flats. It is not a repair fund.

Not sure if it is the battery or the alternator? Our guide to battery or alternator shows how to tell. If you hear a click and nothing else, read why a car clicks but will not start.

Which Option Is Cheapest for You

Here is how we would pick, based on the calls we see.

  • Newer car, short commute. Check the maker plan first. You may already have it. Add the insurance add on if the maker plan has ended.
  • Older car, long commute. A motor club with long tows earns its keep. On the Classic level, a tow from Temecula to a Riverside shop is far past the free 7 miles. Join before you need it, since the bigger tiers make you wait 90 days.
  • You almost never break down. Skip the plan and lean on a card with pay per call. One call a year at $79.95 costs less than the top club tiers.
  • You drive the 91 or 215 to work. Know the patrol hours. A flat at 7am on a weekday may cost you nothing.

One more thing. A lot of breakdowns do not need a tow at all. A mechanic who comes to you can often replace the battery, starter or belt right where the car sits. Then you skip the tow and the second trip. That is how our roadside assistance and mobile mechanic service work. Want to see what a driveway repair costs? Read our guide to mobile mechanic cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does roadside assistance typically cost?

About $25 a car per policy period as an insurance add on, about $40 to more than $160 a year for a motor club, or about $80 a call if you pay as you go. Freeway Service Patrol help in Riverside County is free during weekday commute hours.

Can you get roadside assistance without being a member?

Yes. Many Visa cards include Roadside Dispatch, a pay per call line with no dues. One April 2026 guide listed $79.95 a call with 5 miles of towing. You can also call a tow company or a mobile mechanic and pay their rate.

Can I call AAA if I am not a member?

You can join on the spot, but in Southern California a breakdown that happened before you joined is not one of your free calls. The club charges a separate service fee for same day help.

How many miles does AAA tow for free?

In Southern California, Classic tows up to 7 miles, Plus up to 100 miles, and Premier gets one tow up to 200 miles a year with the rest up to 100 miles.

Does using roadside assistance raise my insurance?

It can. Consumer Reports says insurers may count roadside calls as claims, which could affect your premium. Ask your agent how they treat it before you use it for small things.

Does roadside assistance pay for repairs?

No. It pays for the tow, jump, tire change, fuel or lockout. Parts and repairs are on you. Some insurance labor coverage pays for work at the scene but not the parts.
