Banning sits inside the San Gorgonio Pass at about 2,300 feet of elevation. That puts your car between two big mountain ranges — the San Bernardinos to the north and the San Jacintos to the south. The pass funnels wind through town almost every day. Gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour are common, and that wind picks up sand and dust off the desert floor.
