Coachella is the working heart of the eastern Coachella Valley. Most of the famous music festival traffic happens at the Empire Polo Club just over the line in Indio, but Coachella itself runs on date farms, citrus, and the trucks and crews that work the fields. The vehicles here tend to be older, harder-used, and more important to people's livelihoods than in any other valley city.
Three things define driving in Coachella:
Heat that's even worse than Palm Springs. The eastern valley is several degrees hotter than the west end. Summer days at 118 to 120 are normal. That kind of heat punishes engines that already work hard.
Salton Sea-bound roads. Highway 86 heads south from Coachella toward the Salton Sea and Imperial Valley. The road is long, hot, and remote. A breakdown out there can mean a long wait. We strongly recommend a cooling system inspection before any summer drive south of Mecca.
Work-truck wear. Half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks here haul tools, equipment, and farm supplies all day. They burn through brakes, suspension parts, and tires faster than commuter cars. They also tend to skip oil changes when the work gets busy.
Saving the Work Truck
If you make your living from your truck, here's the simple maintenance plan that saves you the most money over time:
Every 5,000 miles: Synthetic oil change, walk-around for tire wear, check belts and hoses for cracks.
Every 30,000 miles: Brake inspection, transmission fluid check, fuel filter on diesels, full scan.
Every summer: Coolant condition test, AC performance check, battery load test. Heat is the killer — get ahead of it.

Festival Season
If you live in Coachella, you already know what April brings: traffic, parking, and out-of-town drivers who don't know the back roads.
