- On three of our own 2026 valve cover gasket tickets and estimates, the price came to $225 to $741.
- The gasket is the cheap part. On our estimates it cost $33.74 to $176.50. Labor hours set the rest.
- RepairPal lists an average of $375 to $514, and $288 to $423 of that is labor.
- On 12 bigger engine estimates, the gasket rode along as a parts line with no labor of its own.
- A slow seep can wait a little. Oil dripping on a hot exhaust can't. NFPA lists oil leaks as a car fire danger sign.
$225 to $741. That's what a valve cover gasket job came to on our own Supercanic tickets and estimates in 2026, labor and parts together.
The low end was an hour and a half of labor with the owner's own gasket. The high end was a full kit, new bolt grommets and three and a half hours on a 2017 Nissan Altima.
We fix cars across Hemet, San Jacinto and the rest of Riverside County, at the shop and in driveways. So this starts with our numbers, then holds them up to the national ones.

What Our 2026 Jobs Show
These are three real valve cover gasket jobs from our Shop Desk records. Labor is at our posted $150 an hour.
| Car | What Was on the Ticket | Labor | Parts | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes C280 | Gasket, owner brought the part | 1.5 hours, $225 | $0 | $225.00 |
| 2007 Dodge Ram | Diagnosis and gasket | 2 hours, $300 | Not listed | $300.00 |
| 2017 Nissan Altima 2.5 | Gasket kit, bolt grommets, sealant | 3.5 hours, $525 | $216.25 | $741.25 |
The Mercedes and the Altima are written estimates from September and October 2026, the price the owner saw before any work. The Ram is the ticket from a job we wrote up in September. Tax is not included.
The Altima came in above RepairPal's Altima range of $211 to $289. Most of that gap is the hours we wrote and a full kit with new grommets. When two quotes are far apart, ask each shop what they plan to replace. A gasket alone and a gasket with grommets and seals are not the same job.
Labor Sets the Price, Not the Gasket
A valve cover gasket is a rubber or cork seal. It sits between the top of the engine and the cover over the valves. Its job is to keep oil in.
The part is cheap. CarParts.com lists a Toyota Camry gasket at $12 to $31 and a Honda Civic at $20 to $73. On our own estimates, gasket lines ran $33.74 for a Fel-Pro set up to $176.50 for a full kit.
The hours are what move the bill. RepairPal puts the average job at $375 to $514 as of its September 3, 2026 update. Of that, $288 to $423 is labor and $87 to $91 is parts.
Why so much labor? It depends on what sits on top of the cover.
- Inline four cylinder. One cover, often right on top. Coils or plug wires come off, then the bolts. This is the short end.
- V6 or V8. Two covers. The back one can hide under the intake. CarParts.com notes some V6 engines need the alternator and wiring moved out of the way.
- Intake in the way. RepairPal says some engines need the intake manifold or other big parts off just to reach the cover bolts.
So the same gasket can be a one hour job on one car and a four hour job on another. RepairPal's own car list shows that spread. It runs from $209 to $276 for a Honda CR-V up to $458 to $615 for a Ford F-150.
Cheaper When It Rides Along
The cheapest valve cover gasket is the one you replace while the cover is already off.
We looked at every 2026 estimate in our Shop Desk with a valve cover line, August through October. There were 13. Only one was a valve cover job on its own. The other 12 were bigger jobs that open the top of the engine anyway.
| Bigger Job on the Estimate | How Many | Gasket Line |
|---|---|---|
| Timing chain or cam work | 7 | $33.74 to $106.50 |
| Head gasket or cylinder head | 2 | $50.75 |
| Engine swap or rebuild | 2 | $101.50 for a pair |
| Lifters | 1 | $106.50 |
On all 12, the gasket was a parts line only. No added labor. The cover has to come off for the big job, so a new seal goes back on with it.
Spark plugs are the other good time. On many engines the plug tubes run through the valve cover. If your mechanic is pulling coils for plugs and sees oil in the plug wells, ask what it adds to do the gasket and tube seals in the same visit.
Signs Your Valve Cover Gasket Is Leaking
CarParts.com lists a burning smell as the most common sign. In a driveway, the signs look like this.
- Burning oil smell after a drive. Oil runs down onto the hot exhaust manifold and cooks.
- Wet, dirty edges on top of the engine. Dust sticks to fresh oil, so the seam turns dark and grimy.
- Oil around the spark plugs. CarParts.com lists this one. You see it when the coils come out.
- Drips under the front of the car. Usually the slowest leaks never get that far. A drip means it is getting worse.
- Thin smoke from under the hood. Often oil hitting the exhaust, not a fire. Pull over and check anyway.
Not every oil leak at the top is the valve cover. On a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country we saw in Hemet, the oil showed up at the top rear of the engine, and the fix turned out to be a bigger job. That's why our Town and Country write-up started with a diagnosis, not a gasket. Our guide to what is leaking under your car helps you tell oil from coolant and the rest.
Check the PCV Before You Pay for a Gasket
Most cost guides skip this. A gasket can leak because it's old and hard. It can also leak because pressure inside the engine is pushing oil out.
The PCV system vents that pressure. If it plugs up, oil gets forced past the weakest seals. A new gasket on top of a plugged PCV can start leaking again.
Samarins, a site run by a mechanic, gives one real case. GM bulletin 20-NA-047 ties crankshaft seal leaks on the Buick Encore to a plugged PCV opening, with a P1101 code. The fix includes checking the camshaft cover, which is GM's name for the valve cover, and cleaning or replacing the opening.
So when a car has more than one leak, or a new gasket starts weeping again, ask your mechanic to check the PCV valve and hoses first. Our diagnostics visit covers that.
When a Valve Cover Leak Can Wait
A dry, dusty seam with a little dampness is a slow seep. Check your oil level every couple of weeks and plan the fix.
Fix it soon when oil is reaching the exhaust, pooling in the plug wells, or you're adding oil between changes.
The National Fire Protection Association lists oil or fluid leaks as a danger sign for car fires. It says most car fluids are flammable, and heat plus a leak is enough to start one. If you see flames, NFPA says to turn the engine off, get everyone out, and move at least 100 feet away.
Doing It Yourself
On an inline four with the cover right on top, this is a fair DIY job. A few tips from the jobs we've done.
- Let the engine cool. The cover sits right over hot parts.
- Clean the sealing edge. Old gasket bits and oil left on the head can start a new leak.
- Use sealant only where the gasket says. Follow the sheet that comes in the gasket box. Our Altima estimate carried an $18 tube of RTV sealant.
- Don't crank the bolts. Valve cover bolts take light torque. Too much crushes the gasket or strips the threads. One of our 2026 jobs was a 2010 Honda Civic with a stripped valve cover bolt.
- Replace the grommets if they're hard. On covers that use them, new bolt grommets ran $21.75 on our Altima estimate.
On a V6 or V8 with the intake on top, or on a car with a plastic cover that may be warped, a shop is often the cheaper path in the end.
Valve Cover Jobs Our Crew Has Done
Since November 2025, our Shop Desk shows valve cover gasket work on a 2019 Mini Cooper, a 2009 Acura TSX, a 2021 Kia K5 GT Line, a 2010 Honda Civic and a 2010 Subaru WRX STI.
The WRX is a good picture of mobile work. The owner's apartment didn't allow car repairs, so the car was parked next door and our tech did the passenger side cover there with a Fel-Pro set.
In California, a shop has to give you a written estimate before any repair. It can't charge more than that estimate without your OK. The Los Angeles County consumer office spells that out, and the Bureau of Automotive Repair takes complaints at (800) 952-5210.
A good valve cover estimate shows four things.
- One cover or both, on a V6 or V8.
- The labor hours and the rate.
- Whether grommets, plug tube seals and sealant are included.
- Whether a leak check and a PCV check are part of it.

Quick Hits
- How much would a mechanic charge to replace a valve cover gasket?
- On our 2026 jobs, $225 to $741 with parts and labor. RepairPal lists an average of $375 to $514. Most of the price is labor, so the engine layout matters more than the part.
- Is a valve cover gasket leak serious?
- A slow seep usually isn't urgent. It gets serious when oil reaches the hot exhaust, fills the spark plug wells, or drops your oil level. NFPA lists oil leaks as a car fire danger sign.
- Can you still drive with a bad valve cover gasket?
- For a short time with a slow seep, yes, if you watch the oil level. If you smell burning oil or see smoke, get it fixed before longer drives.
- How long does it take for a mechanic to replace a valve cover gasket?
- On our 2026 jobs, 1.5 to 3.5 hours. An inline four with the cover on top is the short end. A V6 or V8 with the intake in the way takes longer.
- Is a valve cover gasket a big job?
- On most four cylinder cars, no. It's one of the easier engine seals to reach. On some V6 and V8 engines the back cover sits under the intake, which turns it into a bigger job.
- Should I replace the valve cover gasket with the spark plugs?
- If the plug wells have oil in them, yes. The coils are already out, so doing the gasket and tube seals at the same visit saves you a second round of labor.
