No Start / No Crank Diagnostic

Vehicle Won't Start? Here's How We Diagnose It in Riverside County

A no-start or no-crank condition can be caused by dozens of different issues, from a dead battery to a failed fuel pump or a faulty ignition switch. Rather than throwing parts at the problem, our technicians follow a proven step-by-step diagnostic process to find the exact cause the first time.

Our No-Start / No-Crank Diagnostic Process

  • Battery & connections. We test your battery voltage, load capacity, and inspect all cable connections and grounds for corrosion or looseness.
  • Starter circuit. We verify power and ground signals at the starter motor and test the starter relay and solenoid to determine if the engine is physically able to crank.
  • Ignition & security system. We check the ignition switch, anti-theft system, and key/transponder communication to rule out immobilizer lockouts.
  • Fuel delivery. We test fuel pressure at the rail, listen for the fuel pump prime, and inspect the fuel pump relay and fuse circuit.
  • Spark & compression. If the engine cranks but won't fire, we check for spark at the plugs and verify cylinder compression to rule out internal engine failure.
  • OBD-II scan & live data. We pull stored codes and review live sensor data to identify any electronic faults preventing the engine from starting.

Because we're a mobile service, we come directly to your location anywhere in Riverside County, whether you're stuck in a driveway in Hemet, a parking lot in Murrieta, or on the side of the road in Temecula. No towing required. We bring our diagnostic equipment to you, find the problem on-site, and give you a clear explanation and repair estimate before any work begins.

Real Codes We've Pulled, and What They Meant

Every screen below was photographed on an actual Supercanic diagnostic call. A code is where the diagnosis starts, not where it ends, here's how we read them.

Scan tool showing P0300, P0302, P0303 and P0306 misfire codes during an engine diagnostic in Riverside CA

P0300 + P0302 / P0303 / P0306

Riverside · rough running

Random misfires plus three specific cylinders all missing at once. One weak coil or plug doesn't do that, this pattern pointed at fuel delivery, and it ended in a fuel injector replacement that fixed all four codes.

Snap-on scanner showing P0171, P0300, P2096 and P0137 on a 2021 Jeep Wrangler in Riverside CA

P0171 + P0300 + P2096 + P0137

2021 Jeep Wrangler · Riverside

Four codes, one story: the engine ran lean (P0171), lean caused misfires (P0300), and both oxygen sensor codes were downstream symptoms. Chasing each code separately would have replaced parts that were never broken.

Scan tool showing code P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1 during a diagnostic in Hemet CA

P0171. System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Hemet · check engine light

The computer is adding extra fuel to compensate for too much air or too little gas. Usual suspects: a vacuum leak, a dirty MAF sensor, or a weak fuel pump. We smoke-test and check live fuel trims instead of guessing.

Scan tool showing code P0016 crankshaft-camshaft position correlation on a 2010 Chevy Equinox

P0016. Crank/Cam Correlation (Sensor A)

2010 Chevy Equinox · Hemet

The crankshaft and intake camshaft are out of step with each other. On this 2.4L Equinox that's the classic signature of a stretched timing chain.

Scan tool showing code P0017 crank-cam correlation Bank 1 Sensor B on a Chevy Equinox

P0017. Crank/Cam Correlation (Sensor B)

Same Equinox, second vote

Identical story on the exhaust cam. When both correlation codes show together, the chain itself, not a sensor, is almost always the cause.

Scan tool showing code P0011 intake camshaft timing over-advanced

P0011. Intake Cam Timing Over-Advanced

The Equinox again

The intake cam is running ahead of where the computer commands it. With a worn chain and dirty oil, the variable valve timing system physically can't hold position.

Scan tool showing code P0014 exhaust camshaft timing over-advanced

P0014. Exhaust Cam Timing Over-Advanced

Fourth code, same root cause

Four cam/crank codes on one engine = one worn timing chain, not four bad parts. That's why we read every code before quoting anything.

Scan tool showing code P2271 oxygen sensor signal stuck rich Bank 1 Sensor 2

P2271. O2 Sensor Stuck Rich (B1 S2)

Downstream oxygen sensor

The sensor behind the catalytic converter stopped switching. Sometimes a dead sensor, sometimes the converter itself, we verify with live data before replacing either.

Scan tool with freeze frame showing code P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold

P0420. Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold

The most-searched code in America

The catalytic converter isn't cleaning the exhaust like it should. Important: untreated misfires and lean codes kill converters, so we fix those first, otherwise the new cat dies the same death.

Scan tool showing code P228D fuel pressure regulator exceeded control limits

P228D. Fuel Pressure Exceeded Control Limits

Fuel system running too high

Fuel pressure climbed above what the regulator commanded, a sticking regulator or a pressure sensor lying to the computer. Verified with a gauge before parts.

Scan tool showing code P0326 knock sensor circuit range and performance

P0326. Knock Sensor Range/Performance

The engine's ear

The knock sensor listens for detonation so the computer can protect the engine. When it fails, timing gets pulled and power drops. Cheap sensor, big drivability difference.

Scan tool showing P0303 cylinder 3 misfire during a mobile spark plug call in Hemet CA

P0303. Cylinder 3 Misfire

Hemet driveway · mobile call

One cylinder missing. On this Kia the plugs were worn to the point of misfire, pulled, replaced in the driveway, code gone the same morning.

Scan tool showing code P0305 cylinder 5 misfire detected on a Chrysler 200

P0305. Cylinder 5 Misfire

Chrysler 200 · Hemet

Same family as P0303, different hole. Cylinder-specific misfires let us go straight to the right coil, plug, and injector instead of replacing full sets on a guess.

Scan tool showing code U0100 lost communication with ECM on a Buick Enclave

U0100. Lost Communication with ECM

Buick Enclave · network code

The modules in the car stopped hearing the engine computer. U-codes are wiring and network problems, no engine part fixes them. We trace power, ground, and CAN lines.

Scan tool showing code P0401 EGR insufficient flow on a 2001 Honda Civic

P0401. EGR Flow Insufficient

2001 Honda Civic · Hemet

Exhaust gas recirculation passages clog with carbon over 20+ years. Result: this code and sometimes surging. Cleaning the ports often beats replacing the valve.

Scan tool showing code P0117 engine coolant temperature sensor circuit low

P0117. Coolant Temp Sensor Circuit Low

Chrysler 200 · Hemet

The coolant temperature sensor is reading impossibly hot/shorted. The computer runs blind on cold starts and richens fuel. Small sensor, big effect on mileage.

Scan tool showing code P1524 oil pressure out of range for camshaft advance

P1524. Oil Pressure Out of Range (VVT)

Oil and timing are connected

Cam timing on modern engines is moved by oil pressure. Low oil level or worn oil turns into timing codes like this one, sometimes an oil change and the right viscosity is the whole fix.

Diagnostic tablet showing code P0700 transmission control system on a PT Cruiser in Riverside CA

P0700. Transmission Control System

PT Cruiser · Riverside

P0700 is a doorbell, not a diagnosis: the transmission computer is holding its own codes and asking us to come look. We scan the TCM directly to get the real story.

Diagnostic tablet showing camshaft position actuator circuit code on a Hyundai Sonata in Murrieta CA

Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (B1)

Hyundai Sonata · Murrieta

The circuit driving the intake cam actuator failed. This scan is the reason the job on the invoice says 'camshaft position sensor', the code took us straight there.

Battery tester showing a failed battery with zero percent state of charge during a no-start diagnosis

Battery Test. FAIL, 0% Charge

Before touching a single sensor

Not every no-start is a mystery. This tester said everything: dead battery, replace it. We test batteries and charging before chasing expensive electronics.

Diagnostic tablet showing P0300 misfire with P0455 and P0442 evap leak codes

P0455 + P0442. EVAP Leaks (+ P0300)

Jeep · Hemet

Large and medium leaks in the fuel vapor system, anywhere from a loose gas cap to a cracked hose. Rarely a breakdown risk, always a smog-check failure in California.
