What Is Leaking Under My Car? A Fluid Color Guide

Puddle under your car? Use the color and feel of the fluid to tell water from oil, coolant, brake fluid or gas, and learn which leaks mean stop driving now.

Wet metal underneath tells you where to look. The drip on the driveway tells you what it is.

Quick answer. Clear and watery under the front of the car on a hot day is usually just air conditioner water, and that is normal. Green, orange or pink and sweet smelling is coolant. Dark brown or black and oily is engine oil. Red or reddish brown is often transmission or power steering fluid. A slippery, thin leak near a wheel can be brake fluid, and that one means do not drive.

Key Points

  • Color, feel and smell tell you what is leaking. Put white cardboard under the car overnight to see it clearly.
  • Water from the air conditioner is normal. Nothing else on this list is.
  • Brake fluid and gasoline are the two leaks that mean do not drive the car.
  • A small drip you ignore can drain a system. Low oil or coolant can wreck an engine.
  • Where the puddle sits helps, but fluid can run along the frame before it drops. The wet spot is not always the leak.

How to Read a Puddle

  • Slide cardboard under the car. Leave it overnight. The next morning you can see the real color and where the drip lands.
  • Rub a drop between two fingers. Oil feels slick. Coolant feels thin and a little sticky. Brake fluid feels very slick, almost like thin oil.
  • Smell it. Coolant smells sweet. Gas smells like gas. Gear oil smells strong and harsh.
  • Check the levels. Look at the oil dipstick, the coolant tank and the brake fluid reservoir. A level that keeps dropping tells you the leak is real.
  • Note where it sits. Under the engine is often oil or coolant. Under the middle of the car can be transmission fluid. Near a wheel can be brake fluid.

The Two Leaks You Do Not Drive On

Brake fluid. Your brakes work by pushing fluid through lines to each wheel. If fluid is leaking, you can lose pressure and the pedal can go soft or sink to the floor. If the pedal feels different or the brake warning light is on, do not drive. Our post on what to do when your brakes feel wrong explains the other brake warning signs.

Gasoline. A fuel leak is a fire risk. If you smell fuel around the car, keep sparks and cigarettes away and do not start the engine. Have the car towed.

Leaks You Can Watch for a Day or Two

Many leaks are slow. A few drops of oil under the engine are common on older cars. Still, a slow leak does not fix itself. It gets worse, and it can drop a fluid level without any warning light. Check the level every week until a shop looks at it.

Coolant deserves extra care in our heat. A coolant leak can lead to overheating fast on a 105 degree day. If the temperature gauge climbs, pull over and shut the engine off. Our post on overheating in summer heat walks through what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for a car to leak water?

Yes, if it is clear water under the front of the car after you run the air conditioner. The AC pulls moisture out of the air and drains it under the car. If the fluid has a color or a smell, it is something else.

What color is a coolant leak?

Coolant can be green, orange, pink or blue depending on the type. It usually smells sweet and feels thin and a little sticky.

Can I drive with an oil leak?

For a slow drip, you can usually drive short trips if you check the dipstick often and keep the oil topped up. If the oil light comes on or the leak is more than a few drops, stop. Running an engine low on oil can destroy it.

How do I know if it is brake fluid?

Brake fluid is clear to amber and very slippery. It tends to show up near a wheel or under the brake pedal side of the engine bay. If the pedal feels soft, do not drive the car.

Why is my car leaking fluid only when parked?

Many leaks seep when the car sits and the system cools down or the pressure drops. A leak that only shows up overnight is still a real leak. Put cardboard down and check the level.
