One Bad Stud

The owner booked through our Hemet page. They needed a new wheel stud on their 2010 Honda Insight. Our tech came to their driveway.

A wheel stud is one of the bolts sticking out of the hub that the lug nuts thread onto. If one is bad, that wheel is held on by one less nut than it should be.

What Our Tech Found and Did

The stud's threads were damaged. It happened when they tried to install it. A cross threaded or forced lug nut can strip a stud fast.

Our tech took the wheel and brake caliper off to get at the hub. The bad stud came out and a new one went in.

What to Watch for After a Stud Breaks

Our quote said something worth repeating. If a stud broke because a lug nut was over tightened, check the wheel for cracks too. Too much force can crack the wheel around the holes.

It also said more studs on the same wheel can be done for the cost of parts while it is apart. If one went, take a look at the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive with a missing wheel stud?

Get it fixed soon. The other studs carry more load, and a wheel can work loose. Do not drive far or fast.

How much does it cost to replace a wheel stud?

This one was one hour, $150, at the owner's home in Hemet.

What causes wheel stud threads to get damaged?

A lug nut started crooked or forced on with an impact gun. On this Insight, the threads were damaged during install.

Can a mobile mechanic replace a wheel stud at my house?

Yes. Our tech did this one in a driveway in the evening and test drove it after.

Supercanic tip: Always start lug nuts by hand for a few turns. If one will not spin on easily, stop and look before an impact gun ruins the stud. Call us at (951) 904-2477.
